Chris Barnwell made his debut for Guyana in the 2005 regional Under-15 competition, in the Windwards, as an opening batsman and first-change medium pacer.
He made his Twenty20 debut for Guyana against Bermuda, in the Stanford 20/20 tournament in Antigua in 2008 as an opening bowler. Later in 2008 he made his List A debut for Guyana in the regional 50-overs competition, opening both the batting and bowling, and scoring a fifty. His first class debut in 2009, for Guyana against the Leewards in Nevis, where he opened the batting and bowling again.
A tall, strong and talented player, Chris Barnwell has not yet lived up to his potential (as of September 2012). As a result he has been left out of the Guyana team several times and he does not yet command a steady place in the West Indies T20 International team.
In a Guyana team that has more often than not been dominated by the spin of Bishoo and Permaul, Barnwell's considerable pace provides balance in the bowling. On his day his pacy leg-cutters can be a handful. Capable of batting well enough to open, he can also switch to power hitting, which has helped Guyana to a couple of regional Twenty20 titles.
It would surprise no one if Chris Barnwell develops into a good West Indies all-rounder, but he needs to build consistency at the highest levels.
