Ebo Force Draw With Berbice
A FINE seventh-wicket partnership of 114 between Mohamed Feroze (71) and John Seerattan (63) enabled Essequibo to force a draw with Berbice in the semi-final of the Jones Cup Inter-County cricket series at GCC ground yesterday.
Forced to follow on 319 runs in arrears, Essequibo were in danger of an innings defeat when they lost their first six second innings wickets for 57, but Serrattan and Feroze joined forces in their gallant stand, which kept the Berbice attack out for 134 minutes and averted disaster. Both batsmen coupled stout defence with lusty blows against anything loose.
It was the first time since the inception of the competition that Essequibo were not beaten by an innings. Final scores were: Essequibo 107 and 186 for 8 wickets; Berbice 428 for 8 declared.
When play began yesterday. Essequibo lost their two remaining wickets for the addition of 5 runs, the innings ending at 107. Berbice skipper Indal Persaud immediately enforced the follow-on.
Wickets fell regularly when Essequibo batted a second time. Opening batsman J. Singh batted confidently for 22 until he was foolishly run out. Seerattan, who top-scored in the first innings, again took the role of sheet anchor and when joined by Feroze steered the team to safety. Both batsmen lost their wickets minutes before the close.
By virtue of their first innings lead Berbice will now meet champions Demerara in the final starting tomorrow at the same venue.
