DCC Centenary Celebrations This Week

IN A FEW days the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) will commence its centenary celebration as the club approaches 100 years of existence, with a number of activities to observe this historic occasion. The club was formed in 1912 and has since produced a number of National and West Indian players, coaches and cricket administrators.

The activities are scheduled to commence on July 14 with the Andrew Lyght Sr Memorial Competition, which is scheduled to take place at the DCC ground between DCC and Friends of Former Guyana Cricketers (FFGC). Action continues the following day at the Guyana National Stadium where the Guyana XI will play FFGC.

The Male Cooking Competition and Family Fun Day will also commence on July 15 at the DCC ground.

On July 18, the Atlantic Cricket Club, led by Leslie Lewis will arrive from New York then engage in a practice session at the Eve Leary ground at 13:00hrs. Scheduled on the events calendar is the President’s Reception Cocktail at the DCC from 19:00hrs.

On July 19, the club engages in a ‘welcome and religious ceremony’ at 10:30hrs at the club then the memorial competition continues from 14:00hrs as Atlantis meet Police in a practice match at the Eve Leary Sports Club ground. The evening will have the cricketers wear and costume affair at the Edge lounge at 21:00hrs.

The next day, July 20, DCC will face Atlantis at the DCC ground from 13:00hrs. As the action continues on July 21, Police will play Atlantic at the Eve Leary Ground from 10:00hrs. Also on July 21 will be the Dinner and Ball which is deemed the ‘Black & White Affair” from 19:00hrs at the Tower Poolside. Tickets for this event will be on sale at the venue, DCC and Nigel’s Supermarket.

On July 22, the visitors and members of the club will tour the Splashmin’s Fun Park and will return to the club later in the night for Karaoke at 20:00 hrs.

Police face DCC at DCC on July 23 from 13:00hrs then the day concludes with a Cocktail at a venue to be announced. The tournament final is set for the July 24 at the DCC ground from 13:00hrs and after the presentation of awards, the celebrations will officially conclude.
